Madaket Treasures   1982
Pencil on Paper

"This is an image of one of Nantucket’s most interesting
townspeople. Walter Brown or “Brownie,” was known
for the Nantucket Baskets he weaved, and for collecting
antique bottles and jars. He was often seen hunting for
treasures in the “Madaket Mall”, the local name
ascribed to the town dump. Here he is with some of his
findings…I wanted to explore the light falling on
Brownie and his bottles, as contrasted to the shadows of
the walls and furniture.”
